Earnings at H&R Transport Lethbridge Alberta during 2008/2009

I will double check my earnings from H&R at the weekend, and post them here, including a full breakdown of all the time I was available to work, but left idle by the dispatchers, the point being, that if you are willing and able to work, but are left sitting, there is NO INCOME for those periods.

As H&R Transport are recruiting in the UK very soon, I'm sure the figures will make interesting reading for anyone who intends being a TEMPORARY FOREIGN WORKER, on a TEMPORARY WORK PERMIT for them, with a view to gaining landed status as a permanent resident, and may be going to Canada as a long haul (OTR) truck driver, with little money behind them, and maybe a family to feed and house.

Some people make 'plenty' of money, but live in the truck alone, and don't have to send anything back to the UK or pay rent/mortgage, whereas others live as couples in the truck, or as single drivers with a partner in rented/mortgaged property near base, who until recently could not even work, unless they had a work permit to allow them to do so, and really struggle to make ends meet UNLESS they get the promised 10-12,000 miles per month as stated in the contract in order to attain the guaranteed (in the contract) earnings.

Since I took over Caths blog and posted about H&R I have been contacted by many people who are back in the UK (or still in Canada, and one in the USA), who moved on because the contract they had with H&R was not fulfilled, or was simply flouted and if I didn't mail you back , then please e-mail me again here... mickfly AT gmail DOT com.

Here's a few questions for non-truckers.

If I were to offer you a job with a promised yearly salary of xxx amount, would you be prepared to come to the office every morning and sit all day (unpaid) then go home happy at 7pm because there was no work?

You can't leave the office, because you may miss a job offer.

Would you be prepared to sit in the office waiting from, say 8am (they knew you would be available to work at that time) until 7pm (unpaid) and then work all night until maybe 8am the next day?

You can't refuse the job offer because then you would have waited all day for zilch!

Would you be happy with this scenario?
Would you think it was fair and reasonable if it was a regular, common occurrence?

It's the Canadian way buddy... suck it up.

you started the job at the queitest time in transport at the begining of the worst reccession since ww2 during the worst canadian winter for years as an unproven driver what were you expecting? the company to park up its faithful long serving drivers and give you all the cream? its about time you got over it. it didnt work for you. who cares? it works for plenty of others. you could be putting people off, when they could be the ones it works for. so wind your neck in and move on.i'm sure you'll delete this wouldn't want people geting the wrong idea about h&r and thinking they might just be worth trying. if you got a job with an italian company would you expect the entire workforce to learn english just to suit you?if you come to another country to work and expect it to be just like the uk then what is the point of even getting on the plane.just stay there.

Anonymous coward...again. (yes, I will allow your comment as I do all of them)

You have just given four excuses why the company should not have been recruiting and starting foreign drivers at the time they started me, when they could have just looked after their own, 'faithful' long term drivers, so tell me again why are they recruiting from abroad when things are so bad?

Re-read what you wrote!

Any new foreign driver will not be looked after by H&R, and they WILL not park up their faithful long serving drivers to allow new ones to earn what is promised on the contract.

Maybe you are one of the drivers we spoke to over there who DON'T WANT NEW DRIVERS TO COME OVER, because they are struggling for miles themselves, and it means less miles for everyone when more and more new people arrive.

Hi Mick,
The situation at H&R is worsening, there's no work (16 loads this weekend for 400 trucks!) People are leaving in ther droves (60 last month!) Drivers sat about all over Canada and the US. Company says it's all fine but still can't give you any work! Loads of drivers and families are in dire finantial straigthts. Some are having to t-chek there next rips just to feed there kids. But hey, there off to get more drivers in the next couple of weeks! Looking forward to shareing even less work with even more drivers!

lol....there's plenty of loads this week and weekend....i counted 1098 loads in the box as of friday morning...and we have still had 2 more days to go before we finish off the week..not sure why you would think there are only 16 loads for 400 trucks...?? 60 drivers left....huh?? ... you really should get your facts straight before you hide behind your computer and "lie" like a sidewalk....you should be ashamed of yourself...it's pretty obvious you have way too much time to think up this garbage......have you ever thought of moving to hollywood and writing movie scripts??

The first anonymous comes on here posting 'anonymously', then accuses a second anonymous poster of hiding behind their computer...LOL!

Maybe I should delete all the anon posts, but the poster from calgary can contact me if they have PROOF that there were so few loads, which does seem low to me.

Maybe you have a company problem not a country problem. I work for Bison Transport and although they are not perfect they are the best company I have worked for in over twenty years of trucking. They are hiring and have hired overseas drivers in the past. Before you burn your bridges why not give some other company a try?

Hi mcscott, thanks for your comment, but I certainly don't have a Canada problem, we loved the place, and I also have family living there.

We may be back in Canada after Christmas, and the only reason I have carried on this blog is to get some unpleasant facts across about H&R which are mirrored in the e-mails I have recieved from people who have left the company (and some who are still at the company).

People can follow the links to other blogs which may have positive stories about the company!

At Bison, how did you do for miles during December to April?

The anon posters seems to think It's my fault that I was RECRUITED and came over at the wrong time, when in fact there were people leaving as I arrived, giving me warnings about the company.

The company is free to comment here or send an e-mail for me to post in defence, but the only contact on the blog was from the recruiter/driver relations guy who was simply abusive.

H&R does this all the time, the have only a few contracts leaving Calgary and Vancouver, so they make you sit at camp cargill for 40 hrs! Go to Bison, they pay less per mile, but you definetly get paid more!
